This year’s Shoreham Wordfest coincides with @nationalpoetryday (October 6) and we have an eclectic line-up of poets and events taking place throughout the festival.Attila the Stockbroker and Henry Normal, who have known each other since the ‘ranting poetry’ scene in the 1980s, will be joining forces for an evening of music and poetry at Ropetackle Arts Centre on October 5.At the festival launch there will be an open mic night of performance poetry and storytelling. Plus, a Poetry Pharmacy outside St Mary de Haura Church will be dispensing free personalised poems to passers-by on October 6.Shoreham Chamber Choir has also curated a concert of folk songs from the last four centuries. Shoreham Wordfest isn’t all about books - there are a host of live music events taking place throughout the festival too 🎵Poet Laureate Simon Armitage will be heading to the Ropetackle Arts Centre with his band LYR on October 11. The band will be performing tracks from their debut album Call in The Crash Team, which sets Simon’s spoken vocals to music.The band will be supported by vocalist, composer and musician Rebecca Askew.To celebrate National Poetry Day (October 6) Shoreham Chamber Choir has curated a concert of folk songs from the last four centuries. The music will be interwoven with poems by writers who have been inspired by the beauty of the South Downs.A traditional Ceilidh with Kate’s Kitchen Band is set to get feet tapping at the Shoreham Centre on October 9. The band’s musical influences include traditional and contemporary folk, jazz, classical and morris dance music. Entertaining ‘callers’ will be on-hand to teach each dance with easy-to-follow instructions.Plus, this year we are kicking things off early with a pre-festival musical event - Shoreham Wordfest in Song. Hear from four leading commentators on political affairs, including #Channel4 News political editor Gary Gibbon and journalist Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, as they give their thoughts on the current issues of the day.Following the political theme, former Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt MP will be discussing his recent book Zero, Eliminating Preventable Harm and Tragedy in the NHS, at The Barn Theatre, Southwick on October 12.
